Building conversational flows with session management
Real conversations have context. When a user asks "what about weekends?" they're referring to something mentioned earlier—but our bot treats every message independently. Let's add session management so the bot remembers conversation history and can handle follow-up questions.

The bot should understand that "weekends" refers to business hours from the previous question!
Why sessions matter: Without sessions, every message is processed in isolation. With sessions, the bot maintains context across the conversation. The SessionManager
keeps track of active user sessions, stores conversation history, and remembers important context like the last intent discussed. This allows for natural follow-up questions and makes the bot feel more conversational.
Memory management is critical: Notice how we limit history to 10 messages and clean up inactive sessions every 5 minutes. Without these safeguards, your bot would slowly consume all available memory as users come and go. This is the difference between a bot that runs for years versus one that crashes after a few days in production.
Deploying your chatbot to production
Getting your bot from localhost to production requires choosing hosting platforms for both frontend and backend. We'll use Vercel for the Next.js frontend (it's built by the creators of Next.js and offers the best experience) and Railway for the Express backend.

Adding advanced features: error handling and graceful degradation
Production bots encounter unexpected situations constantly—users send empty messages, APIs timeout, networks fail. Graceful degradation means your bot provides increasingly helpful fallbacks instead of crashing or giving useless errors.

The Message component and ChatInterface already have the necessary code for handling suggestions (see the complete ChatInterface code above with handleSuggestionClick
). Both components are now complete with all the required functionality for:
- Displaying suggestions as clickable buttons
- Displaying options as clickable cards
- Showing metadata badges (intent, confidence, method)
- Auto-sending messages when users click suggestions
No additional changes are needed for the suggestion handling system.
Test the fallback system: Try asking confusing questions multiple times:
- "purple unicorns?" → Low confidence, shows clickable suggestions
- "sdkfjhsdkfj" → Still confused, shows topic option buttons
- "asdfasdf" → Third attempt, offers human support
When you click a suggestion or option button, it automatically sends that message to the bot—no need to manually type or copy. The cursor-pointer
class ensures proper hover states on all interactive elements.
This three-tiered fallback system dramatically improves user experience when the bot doesn't understand. Instead of repeatedly saying "I don't know," it actively helps users find what they're looking for with one-click suggestions.
Optional: Integrating with Discord

Troubleshooting common issues
Problem: Frontend can't connect to backend
Check these in order:

Problem: NLP gives wrong intents
You need more training examples. Add 5-7 varied phrasings for each intent:
- Formal: "What are your business hours?"
- Casual: "when u guys open?"
- Misspelled: "busines hours"
- Questions: "are you open today?"
- Statements: "tell me your hours"
Train and save the model again after adding examples.
Problem: Sessions don't persist across refreshes
That's expected! We're using in-memory sessions that reset when the backend restarts. For production, you'd store sessions in Redis or a database. The current implementation works fine for development and handles thousands of concurrent users.
Problem: Bot is slow to respond
If using NLP, the first request after starting takes longer because the model is training. Subsequent requests are fast. In production, train once during deployment and load the saved model on startup—it's instant.
Problem: Vercel deployment fails

Problem: Railway backend times out
Railway free tier sleeps after inactivity. First request after sleep takes 30 seconds to wake up. Upgrade to hobby plan ($5/month) to prevent sleeping, or accept the cold start for low-traffic bots.

Best practices to follow:
Keep responses concise: Users skim messages. Break long responses into multiple shorter messages or add clear formatting.
Test with real users: Your assumptions about "obvious" questions will be wrong. Every business has domain-specific jargon customers use that you didn't think of.
Monitor confidence scores: If you see lots of low-confidence responses, your training data needs work. Aim for 85%+ of queries above 0.7 confidence.
Handle spelling mistakes: Users type "youre" not "you're" and "wifi" not "Wi-Fi". Your training examples should include common misspellings.
Update regularly: Add new FAQs as your business changes. Set a recurring calendar reminder to review and update bot responses monthly.
Know when to escalate: Some questions need humans. Don't try to make your bot handle everything—make it easy to reach real support when needed.
The most successful chatbots solve specific problems exceptionally well rather than trying to do everything. Your coffee shop bot shouldn't try to take orders, make reservations, or handle complaints—it should answer common questions quickly so human staff can focus on complex requests.
Focus on your 10-20 most common questions first. Make those work perfectly, then expand. FAQ chatbots improve through use—each failed interaction teaches you how to make the bot better.
